my Hotpoint First Edition seems to be stuck in the middle of a programme?

my husband put washing up liquid in our Hotpoint First Edition dishwasher instead of dishwasher tablets, which created a mass of foam and it is now seems to be stuck in the middle of a programme. Any advice?
