Smoke comming from exhaust?

I have a Champion R484P rotary mower and when I start the engine a lot of smoke comes from the exhaust. The smoke almost stops after a few moments with just a very faint whisper whilst running. There are no noises comming from the engine other than normal running noise.
Could the problem be an oil gasket between the exhaust mannifold and the engine perhapes and if so where can I get one.

There is no 'oil' gasket between the exhaust pipe and the cylinder block - just an ordinary heat resistant type that prevents gases escaping. Your problem is either due to severe engine wear or the oil level is too high. Both of these will cause your oil smoke.
