The starter motor does not turn the engine on my 2004 model Suzuki GS500?

The starter motor has recently been failing to engaging with the engine. I changed the battery and the starter motor is spinning but not turning the engine. Is it a common problem and what do you suggest i look for to repair it?

your starter clutch or starter gears are probably worn, you can access them from the left hand engine casing just behind the flywheel. if you are inspecting them, you will lose your engine oil so i suggest you put down a drain tray & also have a new engine casing replacement gasket. it's unusual for these parts to give trouble because the starter motor usually packs in 1st unless your bike has high mileage or has been used for dispatch type riding.
