Why is my Transit van puffing out black smoke?

i would like to know why my transit van is puffing out black smoke even at high speed on the motorway, it seems every time i apply the gas i get a puff, its not continuous. also why is the steering feeling "sticky", thankyou.

Black smoke-- usualy a fuel related problem on a diesel. Have you tried changing the Fuel filter (diesel filter)?

Thankyou, yes it is diesel so perhaps i could try that it dosent sound too bad then. Any idea about the sticky steering? Thanks ever so much for your answer. much appreciated.

Hi
if its petrol i would suggest your valve stem seals have gone allowing oil to enter the cylinder or if its a diesel its possible it needs an oil and filter change.
