smoke on start up?

talbot 2.5td autostratus can anybody tell me why when i first start my diesel engine it smokes really bad blue smoke and engine misfires a lot till it warms up once at operating temp smoke is gone and misfire is also gone thanks kez

the glow plugs are not working, take them out and put them across a battery, using a pice of wire from the top of the plug (treaded part)to the + pole and the side of the plug (the part thats screws into the head) to the _ side pole they should glow after 10 seconds, just check the voltage on them to make sure they are 12 volt, this is on the side of the glow plug.

hi kez,possible that the valve stem seals are worn letting oil into each cylinder & once it's warm the stem expands & stops the oil going into the cylinder hence no blue smoke
