how can i fix my polti vaparetto 2400?

I'm having the same problem I think ~ red heating light comes on, then it switches to red out of water light after a very short period inspite of plenty of water in the tank! Polti want major£££ just to look at it ~ Italian quality at it best? Any suggestions of other repair agents or DIY would be great.
