VW T4 Caravelle - How check fans working without running engine?

VW T4 Caravelle K reg. Possible overheat. Temp gauge on dash not working and need to know how to check fans are working. Worried about leaving engine running too long without knowing temp. Related item(?) is it drops oil which might be from overheating?
Any ideas?
