can i use a filter to take the water out of the petrol tank without takeing the tank out of a talbot autosleeper motorhome

I know years ago i used to own a prefect car which used to get water in the petrol tank.We used to pour methalated spirits about half a litre into the full petrol tank.It binds the water and petrol together i was told.All i know is it worked and it would run ok,then i would fill it up again with petrol when it was almost empty.Hope it works.
