Gear selection on 10 year old Nissan Micra Auto?

I have a 10 year old Nissan Micra Automatic and once the drive failed to opperate. I was advised to top up the gearbox oil which seemed to have solved the problem. However it has occured on two other occasions and I have been told it may be due to the gearbox brushes.
Where are these brushes located and can they be removed and replaced without removing the gearbox from the car?
Or is there any other simple explanation?

brushes are built in to a plate on gear box.can be removed without takeing box out. location under top hose.could be torqe converter witch has powder particals in it. when u accelerate.more amps are prodused through brushes and powder particals stick to torqe converter.
