IBM Thinkpad Type 2647-87U?

I have an IBM Think pad
Type 2647-87U
Serial 78-ACVG9 00/11

It is running Windows xp professional
PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0

When I turn it on it only gets to 1 screen that says:

CPU = Intel Mobile Pentium III processor 800 MHz
640K System RAM Passed
255M Extended RAM Passed
0256K Cache SRAM Passed
System BIOS shadowed
Video BIOS shadowed
UMB upper limit segment address: E000
Mouse initialized
Fixed Disk 0: TOSHIBA MK3021GAS
ATAPI CD-ROM: HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-S200
ERROR
0175: Bad CRC1, stop POST task.

Press F1 to enter SETUP
Press F12 to choose temporary boot device

Pushing either of these does nothing.

I put a windows xp disc in the CD drive. The light blinks and it acts like it is reading the disk, but nothing happens. Disk doesn't auto run.

Can't get to DOS
Can't get to setup
Can't get to safe mode

I went to Lenovo.com's support site and entered the POST error message I got.

The EEPROM checksum is not correct.
System board is the most likely cause.

Is there anything I can do other than replace the system board?

Any help is appreciated.

Yes. Check all the connectors that attach to the system board. That is to say, disconnect and then connect them one at a time. This will 'remake' all of the connections.

Alternatively and in addition take another trip to Lenovo's site and download the Hardware Maintenance Manual and then work your way through the diagnostics.

If you can't find the bug or remaking the connectors doesn't fix it, then a Motherboard replacement would almost certainly cost more that the box is worth as it is VERY old now.
