Isn't the main exhaust at the front? Why is there, also, the small mesh exhaust at the back?

Look at the back of your cleaner. Near the hose inlet is a very small, mesh air exhaust for the motor. simply unscrew the small cover ( beware it is spring loaded ) clean the mesh filter and refit, once the motor has cooled it should be fine. Hope this is helpful.

Often, the motors in vacuum cleaners are cooled by the air passing over them caused by their own suction, so the first thing to do is to clean all of the filter(s) - being aware that some may be hidden away (Dysons for example). However, if your machine is cutting out almost immediately then it sounds like the motor itself has had enough.
