I cannot adjust the height as the adjustor does not respond. The adjusting knob turns without effect and the nut holding it to the adjustor rod does not tighten. It may be I'm missing the obvious - any suggestions?

I have just managed to obtain the repair kit from my local supplier

If you Empress has a plastic body, the thread in the adjuster hole has stripped. This is an extremly common problem, and I'm afrain it's unsolveable. There USED to be a repair kit available consisting of an insert, and a new adjuster knob, but I've not seen one for years.

You can pack under the knob to acheive the correct (non-adjustable) cutting height, but other than that, there's no cure.
