after about the first 5 minuites my hoover just stops working could it be the motor?

Probably the overheat temperature switch on the motor - the motor is getting too hot - Why ? - check the filters - they are probably dirty. Unlikely the switch is faulty, but possible, also possible engine is on way out. Fun to replace anything down to motor level
