Does my Smeg Fridge door seal need replacing?

The seal on my Smeg fridge/Freezer (fridge seal) does not keep contact with the inner door at the top, can this be adjusted, or can it be replaced, if so how? Thanks for any help /advice

I think I have the answer for you guys. I had the same issues along the top of gasket and about 8” down the hinge side. Buy yourself a bag of stuff called Foam Backer Rod. Approx 1/4”. Cut a strip to accommodate the length of your gap. Then from inside fridge, gently lift gasket seal….you can see under the seal. Insert foam strip snugly.

Viola…..seals nice and snug

Your welcome

I have the same problem with the seal on my Smeg fridge - there is a gap at the top of the door. My second (replacement) Smeg fridge (which arrived in July 2015) has the same problem as the first fridge (which arrived in August 2014). The first Smeg technician told me the seal was faulty - and it could not be repaired or replaced, and it was necessary to replace the fridge. The replacement fridge has the same problem, and the second Smeg technician told me that Smeg fridges are designed to have a gap at the top. Sounds odd to me. Has anyone else been told that the seal not connecting at the top of the door is in fact a Smeg design feature?

I fixed the upper corner gap of our 32 after looking for a better quality retro fridge (couldn´t find any).

There was already a small cut in the seal. I enlargened it a bit, took some 25 cm of soft window seal and, without removing the tape that covers the glue, pushed it inside the gasket. I needed a long and dull screwdriver to do this smoothly.

I did this both horizontally in the top side of the gasket and vertically, downwards, maybe. This supposedly filled the gasket a bit and made it "thicker". Not enough though.

Hence I took some more of the window seal, lifted the top horizontal gasket a bit from under (carefully not to rip it off the door), and inserted the window seal under there. This makes the gasket even a bit thicker. I fit there quite snugly and I didn´t need to reveal the glue here neither. Still not enough.

Then I lifted the front side of the fridge about 3 milimetres. To do this I needed small, sturdy pieces of metal with plasti on the reverse aside to protect the wooden floor. I actually used round fridge magnets. Don't tell the kids... The small front screws meant for adjusting the angle of the fridge are to short and dropped off when I try to screw them more.

Together all this resulted in better sealing already. Then I spread vaseline on the gasket (only where the problems was). This helped some more. The vaseline was a bit yucky at first, but after wiping it off a few times it is at least not as visible (it sounds a bit funny when opened, though).

Now the seal works much better. It still has a small, say 5 mm long gap, but even that seals almost tightly when I give the door a gentle push after closing.

This fixed our problem. But I do wish Gorenje would make there SMEGs better in the future. This feels okay but only after settling with the fact that it really sucks more to invest 1400 euros again wihout any guarantees of mending.

I have the same problem - in each corner of the door, the rubber seal has warped. It no longer makes contact by up to 3mm in the corners. This lets air into the fridge, so electricity consumption goes up and there is condensation inside the fridge.

I spoke to someone at smeg-service.co.uk and they say the seal cannot be replaced and that I must replace the ENTIRE DOOR!!! How wasteful is that? And doors don't come cheap, in this case... £383!!

The model is S30STRP and it is a few years old. I don't know how many as I did not buy it.

Nathan replied on this thread that you can now buy Smeg door seals for about £40. I would love to know where.

Our Smeg door seal had a split and therefore slightly re-inflated itself to a point where it would not fit, to replace this seal meant a new door, £300.....Last Smeg I will ever buy!!!!

Smeg say the fridge has got to be perfectly level then alwoed to defrost for 24 hours then that should allow the cabinet to go back into shape does not always work

I have the same problem and have checked the above without success.

The seal of the door does not make contact for about 3 inches and by about 1mm.

It looks a little squashed - which is why I guess it is not forming a seal.

Can this be replaced or fixed?

If the magnetic door seals are not damaged you probably need to check and reset door alignment.
(A) Empty contents.
(B) Slacken the upper and lower hinge bracket screws which will allow the door alignment to be set square.
(C) Tighten slightly and recheck, re-adjusting if need be. It's a bit awkward because you usually have to open the door to get at the screws and the door slips out of true if they're too lose.
I find it's easier to do with fridge resting on its back with door uppermost - BUT protect the radiator coils from damage.
