My Car won't start. No ignition or other lights?

Hi
My Renault Megane will not start
The remote unlocking key did not work and when I opened the door manually and tried to start there were no dashboard lights whatsoever
I checked Battery connection and all ok. A friend tried to jump start it but nothing happened but with one exception of a very faint change to the seat belt warning light. The engine would not start and there was some smoke from under the bonnet. We stopped trying this and the red lead from the jump leads was really hot. I do not think it was the battery as I did not leave any lights on and normally there would be at least something. Appreciate any advice that anyone can give
Thank you very much

had similar problem with megane scenic 2 04 plate dci,did everything cut out except hazzard lights?
if so [probably main fuseable link blown] battery + post has a large metal fuse not spade type . that goes to terminal next to post ,you can bridge gap in emergency, but it has to be a high rating [like fuse in jump starter]portable unit.it will need replacing as soon as possible if this has blown. hope this helps ta rich

you need to check battery first to ensure it is giving at least 12v, i think on some renaults that there is a main fuse in or part of battery positive lead which could have blown
