C5 2.0hdi 2003. Starts ok sometimes but not always?

My C5 2.0hdi 47.000mls drives lovely. But starts good sometimes, and then not so good other times (but eventually starts with a few turns of the key and sitting bout 10mins. Any ideas ?

unlikely to be glow plugs as they don't operate on the H D I engine untill the ambiant temperature drops to zero or below, check the fuel unions around the engine bay as a loose union could be allowing air in to the fuel system which will have to be purged when starting
