How can a fix my steering on John Deere LT155 Lawn Tractor?

I have a John Deere LT155 lawn tractor that has stopped steering. All that happens when I turn the steering wheel is that it just spins and the wheels don't turn. It was hard to turn at first but was still turning, eventually this happened, not turning of wheels at all. How do you fix, is there a free manual that explains it or what would it cost to have a dealer fix it. I'm thinking about puting it up for sale as is, but wonder what I should charge.

I had the same problem but at 12 years old for my LT155 steering, ok on left but right spins and sometimes it would snag. After looking at it I noticed the steering sector would come in contact with the frame and I filed it down until it did not do it again. I am going to replace the belt, idlers, Steering shaft, sector and the bushings. I do not know if the steering was sticking due to the bushing wear and the sector coming in contact with the frame?

I've had this same issue as well and thought too that the issue was with the steering column and mating gear assembly. Upon closer examination, the issue ( at least in my case) was that the tie rod ends had worn away the hole in the metal fins that turn the wheels when you turn the steering wheel. The original fit is nice and tight but over the years and with no grease, that hole gets enormous and the steering gets really sloppy. Eventually, it gets so sloppy that the steering column no longer mates with the gear assembly. It's a really crappy design by JD and for all of us that bought John Deere tractors (and paid quite a premium over the competition's tractors) because they were supposed to be indestructible and reliable for years, there ought to be some recognition by JD that this is caused by a design flaw and nothing else. That design will never stand up to the thousands of turns one will take over the years. They really phoned it in on this one. Shame on you JD.

I Have a simalar tractor (155c) that I purchased 4 years ago. The steering gear and pinion were replaced twice under warranty. I have replaced them 4 more times since for a total of 6 times. Upon trying to get somewhere with John Deere help line it had fallen on deaf ears. Yesterday10-7-2010 I filed a claim with the better business bureau. I suggest you do the same thing. This is a shame . It is all over the net with people having issues with this machine

my l155 is doing allmost the same thing i picked up a l155 shell with a good steering set up i have found the steering shaft at the lower end is stripped and the geer it mates to on the underside of the tractor is bad to change this it is a real pain to do you have to remove the steering wheel and the carter pin under the dash you also need to remove the mower deck and get the tractor up high as possible or turn it on its side and remove the tension spring the shaft will come out from the bottom now the hard part you will see two i/2 inch nuts that hold the steering gear that you have to remove the gear also has a snap ring clip that holds it from comming out to get at it is almost impossible it is located behind the metal piece that holds the 3 or for relays you have almost no way to get at it itried to remove the dash but the park brake handle hasto be removed and the bolt and nut that holds the mower deck handle has to be removed to remove the dash panel to gain access to the snap ring clip that requires a pecial tool once you remove the clip the gear will come out and you can replace it make sure you also replace the collars the shaft goes thru also before going to far you have to remove the steering arms fom the gear
