Dont know if this helps.
If the machine fills and only stops working when the drum is about to turn it is likely to be the brushes, I would try this first as brushes are cheap and if it works, you can then afford a bottle of wine to celebrate

I would guess that it's also heating the water too.

My superficial diagnosis is that the motor or motor control circuitry is defective - or perhaps the drive belt.

Is it a front loader or a top loader?

The make and model may be important when you call an engineer.
