A140 engine ecu changing?

I have been told that the engine ECU is faulty and that it will cost £1000. to change. With my reasonable mechanical knowledge, I would be happy to do the job myself. My question is, do I just need to remove the old one, and fit the new part, or does it need some sort of setting up to match the car?

It will certainly need to be matched to your car so that your keys will actually work the immobiliser and central locking systems etc......you could be heading for a nightmare here but I'm not really certain.
