the top hose from the radiator normally runs to the thermostat housing

Use Google - select images - enter thermostat housing - view the pictures - they will give you an idea of what to look for - the thermostat will be inside the housing - not all engines are the same and you don't mention your make or model - a cooling water pipe will join with the housing.
