Craftsman Riding Mower DLS3500 Will Not Run?

I have a Craftsman Riding Mower DLS3500 (Model 917.287121). It tries to start but will only run for about a second. I bought it brand new and after 4 uses it does not run. I have cleaned the carburator, replaced the fuel filter, and even replaced the spark plug.

Thanks Steve. The fuel filter was installed correctly. Fuel is flowing into the carb, and it does start, but just not run for more than a second or two. The gas cap is just standard.

Ryan, July 2009
Some models have a threaded nub on top of the gas cap to allow air into the tank while in use, but prevent fumes from escaping after use. If your model has this, try to turn it counterclockwise to open the air vent.

Another possible problem is the fuel filter was installed backwards. Check the flow.

Sears has been less than helpful and did not honor the warranty. I was told it was a shorter warranty than originally stated. So I am on my own. :-)

Yes, there is an electrical plug plugged into the bottom of the float chamber with a black and gray wire going from it (the black grounded) and the gray around the engine to the starter or solenoid (I could not tell).

You could always ask the dealer to sort it under warranty Ryan, but does the carburettor have an electrical lead going to it, at the bottom of the float chamber?
