Parked near a wire fence and it just caught the trim strip on when the passenger door opened back, resulting in the strip coming off.

You can see that it should just slide back in with hooks locating in lug holes in the door and a quick shove forward to locate on the bodywork.
But NO this does not work, even with the use of silicone to enable the slide.

Any tips appreciated - do I have to remove the inner trim and secure from INSIDE?

Your technique is correct, thats exactly how its fitted. However, all pegs must be in line and no slots damaged to get it to slide in. We position the strip correctly, pushing into the door, and whack the free end with a rubber hammer to help it along. If it wasn't tight, it would pop back off again.
