how can i fix my gearbox in ford transit?

i have a 2003 front wheel drive transit.
the gears 1 , 3 and 5 all work ok.
2 and 4 wont go into and reverse it might go in every 1 in 15 times it is tried.
i have been told it can be a few different things but mainly i am told i neeed to replace the gearbox.
can it be fixed or do i have to replace the gearbox.

if g box has gone stiff its normally bearing on selector located on top of g box

These transits have a cable operated gearshift, and the adjustment of these cables is critical and must be done by someone who knows what they are doing. If that has been done, then another box seems to be the only option.
