jd garden tractor?

my tractor wont start. It stopped on me while mowing and i took off fuel pump, looked ok, so put back on. Can turn motor over by jumping poles on solenoid but wont start. And wont turn over with key?? I'm stumped. Please help.

thanks phil and john, you guys were on the mark. wire came off solenoid, when reattached, started perfectly, thanks a bunch!

Probably a faulty interlock switch. Could be under the seat, but that's not usually hooked into the start circuit. Check the 'brake on' and 'cutter on' switches. If either are bad or mal-adjusted (or the cutter really IS engaged or the brake really IS off), it will cause these symptoms.

The faults here may be linked together....when you turn the key, power doesn't seem to be getting to the solenoid because the engine doesn't crank. When it does crank by jumping the solenoid it doesn't start...so I think you have wiring problems in the ignition switch area.
