gear box oil leak?

When I reverse park and come back to my car a few hours later there is an oil puddle under the car near the front off side of the car, but when I park forward there is no leak. I have been under the car but cant see where it is coming from and after I have driven for a few miles and checked again all the liquid has burnt off. All the fluid levels under the bonnet are ok. What is going on as it is driving me mad.

hi John, thanks for your answer, I forgot to say that the car is a 52 plate fiesta with the zetec engine. the liquid is definatly oil but is not 'dirty' oil if you know what I mean. It is thin like clutch fluid but as I said all the bottles are full, would this be the kind of oil that is in the gear box? or does the water in the air con unit have any addatives in it to give it a greasy feel?

Have you checked the gearbox oil level? Occasionally the drive shaft seals fail (easy repair) but the signs are obvious. You are sure that the pool is oil and not water from the air conditioning dryer?
