Smoke coming from headlight stem switch?

When my Renault DTi Laguna headlights are on, I often get smoke coming from the area surrounding the headlight stem switch. I have replaced the stem switch but the problem remains and I'd like to avoid a fire in my car if possible. Any ideas?

Mike. I had the same problem with a Maestro that I one owned. There is too much current going through the switch and it's overheating. I connected the lights to a couple of relays powered from a fused link direct from the battery, the relays do the switching and only a small current goes through the light switch. The relays come with a wiring diagram so it's not a hard job. Hope this helps
