When I hold the key close to the sensor on the roof, I can unlock and lock the doors and the light stops flashing, However when I take the key further from the sensor it stops working. What can I do? Is there a battery in the Key, is it the sensor or can I cut the cables and extend them and move the sensor closer?

I'm guessing it's a Renault Laguna with infra-red fob transmitter.
You need a new battery in the key. If you swap the battery quickly you wont have to re-sync the key.
