cambelt fitting?

I have fitted a cambelt to a Bedford Rascal but as i turn the engine by hand it starts to come off the sprockets, will it damage when i start the engine and how can i make it stay in position.

The engine will be damaged when you try to start it - don't try until all of the pulleys are back on.
