alternater shorting out?

every time i connect my alternater it sparks really bad like its shorting out it is of a mitsubishi l200 03 reg does this mean it needs replacing or is it electric fault

sounds like an internal fault probably blown diodes.usually caused by reversed battery connections.if the battery has been disconnected make sure it is connected positive to positive negative to negative.possibly also caused by jumpstarting incorrectly.

You should check the condition of the lead that comes from the alternator and goes either to the starter motor connection or directly to the battery.....look for signs of burning or chafed insulation. However, if the wire sparks directly you try to connect the alternator up, it sounds like it has an internal fault.
