clutch problem?

Hi i own a rover 45 2000 model .however i have a problem with the clutch the clutch goes down to the floor ok but has started making a whining noise what could it be? its a really awful sound .has any one got any idea please thank you carol

Generally speaking, if it makes a noise when you push the clutch down it's a clutch problem (usually the release bearing), if it's noisy when the clutch is up it's a gearbox problem.

The noise you hear is the clutch release bearing - as the name suggests it compresses a revolving spring disc when the clutch pedal is down. It will get worse, and the only cure is to have a new one fitted - and this should include a new clutch friction and pressure plate, together with a new release bearing.
