Micra Tempest 2002,gear selection problem?

Having trouble getting into 3rd gear,no grinding just in getting the gear lever to go into position also happens with 5th.After three or four failed attempts it goes in as though theres never been a problem!

No it doesn't, it springs from 5th-reverse to 4th-neutral-3rd, but not from 1st-2nd

When you come out of second gear, the lever should spring across to the third gear position....does your gear lever actually spring across the gate?
