temperature warning light on in ford ka?

my temperature warning light has started flashing on my ford ka, what does this mean
paris, August 2009
i have the same problem could it be that my oil is too low....it seems to be and would this affect my warning light to come on the temp sign

Peter craig court, April 2011
if the light is flashing it could be the engine is overheating.signs of overheating is lack of power from the engine and if you lift bonnet you could see steam and hear the water boiling.if so let engine cool then remove radiator cap and top up.if its full of water the engine may be clogged up.this means engine will need flushing out.if the engine is not overheating then its the temperature guage sender faulty.you will find it in the engine block.just remove wire and undo with a spanner and replace.this should solve the problem.
