maybe you need to fit end of key into a receptor by door lock and turn it, have these on my peugeot and bmw, will turn 5 or 10 degrees

it depends what make of car but usually there is a small switch located inside the door by the physical lock that latches into the car body, so open the door, look at the lock and find the switch, flick it up or down, left or right and it should work fine after that.
