alarm sounding on vauxhall astra ?

car been standing for 6 months have changed the existing battery for a new one please can anyone tell me how to stop the alarm sounding when changing the battery on a vauxhall astra coupe convertible 2litre 2003

Slacken, but do not remove, the negative cable at the battery.
Turn ignition on (dash lights on but dont start engine).
Switch ignition off and remove key, you now have 15 seconds to pull the cable of the battery (thats why you have to slacken it first).
