Both the front windows on my Golf stopped working at different times - I used a mobile car-lock specialist to repair them.
You need to take the inner trim panel off (screws at very bottom and remove grab handle - push panel upwards)
My repair man charged about £50 labour and £50 parts each time. Both faults were the winding mechanism falling apart from stress - switches & motors were fine.
