brake lights and side lights working together?

Hi, new to this site.
I have just bought a 2000 clio, I have noticed that at night the brake lights are on all of the time. Also I have noticed that when I brake (in the day time) the side lights come on as well as the brake lights.
As soon as I turn the side lights on the brake lights come on??
I've been told it is an earth problem, but were do I start?

It turned out to be cheap bulbs and the elements were crossed over.
Thanks everone

when you check the bulbs make sure they are in the correct way wround .the bulbs have stagered pins and sometimes people put them in the wrong way round.

Assuming that the correct bulbs have been fitted, this will indeed be an earth fault. Extract the bulb holder and study the connections...each bulb outer housing where it is plugged in will be connected together, and this will eventually go into the wiring loom and be connected to the cars bodyshell. Its this wire or connection that is the earth, and it could be worth while using a new length of wire to sort this.
