Astra, dashboard display bulbs. How to replace?

Vauxhall Astra 1997 1.6LS. The heater controls do not illuminate when the lights are switched on. How do I replace the bulbs. There is a couple of screws under the buttons that pull off but there seems to be trim to take off first which I cannot see how to remove. Also, the headlight switch does not illuminate when the lights are on. Is this supposed to?

This is a a major headache, I to have the problem with the instrumentation bulbs having blown for the heaters. Having looked in the Haynes manual, it would appear that the only way of changing the bulbs is to strip the interior consell down. If you can live with them not working then leave it as is, however I think for an MOT you will need to rectify the main beam indication light.
Poor design by Vauxhall, in my opinion.
