When I turn the key the starting motor just spins. It will not engage.

pull the blade activation lever very hard off while you crank this should work

you need to check the solenoid to see if it has over heated to do so turn the key to the on position and take a screw driver and cross out the solenoid to see if the engine will start. if not then the coil may have over heated and will need to be replaced. if the engine starts when you cross out the solenoid then you will need to replace the solenoid.
