How can I fix handbrake light on Renault Megane 2005?

I have a renault megane on a 05 plate, it is an automatic. When I am driving along, the handbrake light comes on sometimes and then switches off as well. It doesnt stay on for longer than a couple of seconds, if that - Can anyone tell me why this happens and what I can do to avoid it happening again?
