gearstick?

I was driving my ford escort van and suddenly the gearstick made a loud pop and seemed to drop down. If I pulled it back up I could get it into second gear. What do you think the problem is

sounds like mounting at rear of remote linkage, you will need to access under side to see if its a broken mounting or housing broken.
