How do i turn off the hot water from my cylinder so that i can fit in line valves to all my taps.

My hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard has a cold water feed coming down from the header tank and entering the cylinder low down. This feed pipe has a drain cock at the bottom and a stop valve a little above the cylinder. If I close the stop valve hot water flow at the taps ceases in a few seconds.
