Fisher & Paykal washing machine is just humming, won't wash, spin, etc?

The last time this happened, the repairman told me I put too much detergent in the washing machine. Almost $250 later, he had fixed the machine but I find it ridiculous that a machine would shut down like this from too much detergent.

I don't know how to drain the water out of the machine and where do I check to see if something is stuck in the hose or the pump? Last time, there was a quarter stuck! Taking my son off to college this week and desperately need to clean his clothes and save some money!

Sounds like the pump is blocked & that will be what you hear humming. If water is not fully drained it will not spin. You can try bailing all the water out by hand using a small jug or bowl. Then when the weight of the water has gone you can tip machine back against the wall. Look under the front edge & you will see the drain pump on front right corner of bowl. Try spinning the small plastic fan on the pump by hand to move the blockage. When it feels free, stand machine up & advance to final spin & start. Hopefully it will now drain ok. If it starts humming again then the pump will have to be removed & cleaned. If you are in NZ this should only cost about $50 for the callout & about 15 min work.
