How to fix my 9-year-od Peugeot 206 1.6L ?

I have a peugeot 206 1.6L that I have been using for 9 years plus. Just about two weeks ago, my car started to experience the engine whining or revving when I tried to accelarate at 2dn, 3rd 4th and 5th gear while I am driving.

Just few days ago, the engine was on, but as I pressed the accelarator, the car struggled to move and the engine was revving/whining and the mph meter did not rise as usual that I had to stop at the curb.

I restarted the car by turning off the Engine and get it on again. The car moved for a short distance, and stopped again while the engine was on.

I also noticed I had the snow and sports light flashing automically at random times.

I have Sent the car to my mechanic, he said hes going to change whole gear box to a second hand gear box. Will this fix the peugeot car probllem? Please advice.

Get a diagnostics done on it first - the symptoms you mention indicate an electronic fault on the gearbox.

You can get a diagnostic done at an independant garage but talking from experience in the trade, with these gearboxes the software used by the independants tends to give false indications.

To get a diagnostic at a Peugeot dealer will cost between half an hour and an hour of labour and the PPS software they use is designed specifically for their vehicles and you will likely save money in the long run by not replacing unnecessary components.

Thank you for your opinions and advices. I have considered them and I have got my mechanic to do the electronic diagnostics and gear box.

Initially he said that the gear box harness and electrovalve needed to be changed. But this was not the problem.

After checking, he found out that the gearbox was at fault, and now my car is fine! The electronic diagnostic was done for my car too, as this was regularly done for my car before.

Thank you all! :) Have a nice day. Smile!
Yay, I got my car back :D

The snow and sports lights flashing would suggest the cars electronics have detected a fault. This fault will be logged in the cars computer memory.

It may be better to find a garage with the correct diagnostic equipment which can plug into your car and read these fault codes. It may just be a single valve or sensor which needs replaced rather than the whole gearbox.
A peugeot dealer should have the diagnostics, but an independent will usually be cheaper.
I dont know how many options you will have in your area, or how experienced/equipped your mechanic is with electronic diagnostics.

Yes, my car is automatic.
Since Im from Malaysia the cost is around MYR5000!
=(

The rest of the car is in good condition. Except for that darn gear box thingy. What do you think I should do?

How much is he charging for this? Unless the rest of the car is in very good conditionIt might be as cheap to get another car.

Is the car an automatic?
