This means that there is a fault in either the cars ignition, fuelling or exhaust systems. As the MIL light is on, it means that the fault has been stored in the vehicles on board computer as a 4 digit code, which can be read by any garage with suitable diagnostic equipment. They will also advise you on a repair, and cancel the lamp when the fault has gone.
