Hi Ken,My 53 107 miler started blowing smoke on accelerating i took it to a diesel "expert "they fit a new fuel filter which surpisingly seemed to help!,however it was still smokey and poor acceleration.Reluctantley I went to a main dealer and they said it "might be"the fuel pump,(---about a thousand pounds!!!!!) Not one of the three garages I had been to ever mentioned the E.G.R valve.
It is a very easy job to D.I.Y.
dissconect the electric plug (depress the catch before pulling) then remove the four phillips screws that hold the top on,lift away and give it a bit of a clean.
Now back to the bit that is still on the engine, it looks a bit like a thermostat ,the middle part should be free and smooth when it is pressed, mine was sticking,so I gave it a good squirt of cleaning fluid that made it have it's full range of movement.
Now-replace the top bit but be careful you get the two litle "clawie things"hooked under the round bit ,then press it in place and replace the screws and the electric plug.
Time to do this could be less than half an hour, but I had trouble undoing the screws,so I resorted to cutting the head of one ,also when I put the top bit on it was worse! so I assume I hadn't got it right--second attempt -purrfect!! result No smoke and acceleration is great again.
P.S.If you notice the engine runs a bit lumpy at about 2250 rpm it's another sign the EGR valve needs cleaning.

it's either been FUELED UP by adjusting pump or just injectors worn. it will always give some black on acceleration.

all you are doing is overloading the engine
