SDS Drill Chuck - SDS drill stuck in it!?

I have a SDS drill chuck with an SDS drill bit stuck in it.
Pulling the black collar down does not release the bit. Any ideas or tips on how to get the bit out.

either put it in a vice if you have one or pull the black sleeve back [get someone to hold it for you],hold the drill upwards] use a screwdriver to remove the spring clip [dont let go of it will fly off]the black sleeve will come off remove the spring. inside where the spring goes you will see 2 ball bearings which hold the sleeve of the drill in these will fall out [if not try tapping shaft with hammer] when removed look at the holes where the bearings were and you will see the shaft of the drill get a pointed punch centre pop punch put in hole and try knocking drill bit forward and backwards turn drill over and do same in other hole and keep rotating from 1 hole to the other also put some freeing agent down or even oil this will help when I did it the punch kept moving the bit forward until it could no longer be seen then bend something like end of a screwdriver at approx. 45 to 90 degrees and hit with hammer this freed the broken bit put the drill back together in reverse order

#1 rule always put a small quantity of grease on the end of the bit prior to engaging bit into sds chuck. Any dust particles, dirt, etc will enter its way into sds chuck release area and cause this problem. Using any spray lubricant and working the bit back and forth in the chuck will usually help, however; as my luck goes you will most likely need to remove the SDS chuck as mentioned above or in the case of Chicago Electric heavy duty combo drills you will need to do the following:
1] slide the inner rubber dust cover {rubber disc} as far up to the drill axially as possible exposing the inner top area of holding chuck shaft
2] {Warning: during this next step remember the outer chuck body is spring loaded and there are 2 balls that will fall out} Next you will see a "keeper O-style metal ring holding the outer chuck body in place" circling the inner chuck shaft which will need to be removed in order to then slide off the drill chuck outer body off the chuck shaft.
3] Again be aware of spring pressure and loose retaining balls for securing drills may fall out
4] Clean all components thoroughly and reassemble using liberal quantities of grease in reverse order, remember to simply place balls with grease back into hole areas to aid in reassembly to keep from falling out and finish reassembly

Had the same problem SDS shank broke off in the shaft, used WD40 ran it on hammer removed the retaining ball bearings and eased it out, several broken pieces fell out before the main body came out. Great result thanks.

1 pull out the bit as far as it goes and grease the bit of shaft that you see
2 push in the bit, turn the drill on to chisel only setting.
3 stand the drill on its handle with the bit pointing to the sky
4 turn on the drill grab the bit and push it in till you feel it doing the hammer action
5 repeat this several times and with luck the movement and the heat generated will let the grease fall down into the release mechanism.

1. Squirt chuck with WD40
2. Place drill bit in a vice
3. Turn drill onto "Hammer Only"
4. Switch on whilst pulling back collar and pulling on drill bit

My "Power craft"(Aldi)SDS drill had a 14mm bit jammed in the chuck. I was able to remove it as follows. (After unplugging from Mains) 1) remove black rubber collar, 2)push metal collar back, and prise out circlip . This should allow all these parts and spring to be slid off over the jammed bit, leaving shaft. Be careful not to lose the ball-bearings. (These hold the bit in place when in use). 3) If the bit cannot be removed at this point, protect the shaft of the drill with a piece of slit 15mm copper tubing, and grip it firmly in a vice. 4) Clamp a vice-grip type wrench tightly on to bit, striking this with a hammer, tap the bit out of the shaft. My bit came out after a few sharp blows. 5) Re-assemble, using grease to hold ball-bearings in position in holes in shaft, close the circlip to make it a tight fit. The drill seems to be OK so far. It was kill or cure. I am very happy with the job. I hope this helps some-one.

Many thanks for the advice on releasing a stuck drill bit. The wd40 and repeatedly tugging on the bit eventually released it.
Thanks :-)

I have just had the same problem, resolved using WD-40. Whilst doing some DIY I missed drilling one hole of a series and popped the bit back in the chuck without a further greasing. That seems to be important. I carefully fed in some WD-40 and waggled the bit for around 20 minutes. Then "voila" ! it suddenly came free. The next time I inserted a bit I liberally greased it and that came out again after use with no problem.

Got the same problem.. drill has worked fine for several years,, put a new SDS drill bit in but it now wont come out...

I've even taken off the outer collar (Screw off the top rubber bit and the bottom one and the spring just slides off..watch out for the 4 retaining ball bearings in the slots on the main shaft though!) to leave just the shaft, dropped out the 4 ball bearings but although the drill bit will slide up and down inside the shaft it wont come out..even in the vice!!!

Oh well £30 SDS drill used to hack down most of the house, channel out brick and plaster for pipe runs, dig a trench for drain in concrete floor, drill holes in beams etc.. 4-5 years use and it's knackered...

They just don't make them how they used to anymore HoHoHo HO... oh well off to toolstation for another £30 check special.. at least I'll get another set of chisels as mine are all now very blunt :) I'll just keep the old drill with the new 7mm drill bit in until the bit wears out....;)

pull off the top cover off the sds chuck and then the body off it will slide up to reveal a ball bearing and maybe a cover over it.when you let the ball bearing out the bit will release.then reassemble
