Part availability for Ford Iveco Cargo 0813 H reg?

Hi there

I have a very nice coachbuilt 7.5 ton horsebox on a H reg 1990 Ford Iveco Cargo 0813, which carries 1700 Kg of payload (important as this means I can carry 3 horses within weight limit), with many extras and recent upgrades to horsebox section. I am receiving conflicting advice about the availability and pricing of parts for this lorry, and wonder if anyone could advise me on the continued likelihood of being able to obtain parts from aftermarket companies/other suppliers for it?

It is a low mileage vehicle and a lot of time, money and effort has been spent on designing and maintaining the horsebox on the back, as well as regular servicing for the chassis and if I don't need to sell it and try and find a similar one on a younger chassis (providing difficult as most younger boxes now have things like tack lockers into horse area which is undesirable) I would prefer to keep it. If it is going to get very difficult to get parts for it though, I will need to sell it while it still has some decent value in it, and make the investment to get a younger vehicle, or the even higher investment to get a new one coachbuilt on a younger chassis.

Any advice much appreciated,

Naomi

Hi Ford Cargo friends
My name is Dan Roger and comes from Norway. We have the same problem over here, were it is not possible to get spare parts for Ford Cargo 0813 lorry, 88 mod.
Can I ask You if You know of any scrapyard or manufacture of parts that can/ or will export parts to Norway?

I thank You so much for any information
Have a nice day

Hi Naomi,

Have a look at 'www.phillipscommercialsonline.co.uk' - they do quite a lot of new/pattern parts for the Cargo and also have an ebay shop doing the same thing. They're very easy to deal with and have proved extremely helpful when ever I've had a question for them.

Whilst I would agree the Iveco dealers are of little help for parts, they have on more than one occaision faxed me various (exploded) diagrams of assembly units which has made servicing much easier. In the mean time, you can get new Cargo workshop manuals from 'www.greenmachinesurplus.com' which are a godsend if you're in a position to do the servicing yourself. (Not cheap at £75 each though).

If its small items like switches and other related stuff then hunt down a local scrapyard that specialises in commercal vehicles as they'll have a range of old Cargos from which to select what you need. I recently managed to lay my hands on a usable circuit board which has cured a long running electircal problem I've had :-)

Yes James I have been giving TLC to the same Cargo for the last 11 years! It was new in 1985. I'd be interested in knowing your supplier as those kind of parts are hard to get (in Ireland). E.g. front shock absorbers - are you able to get those?

JD do you have a cargo ? i run two 815 and i get all parts from my local truck factors, yes doors and dash parts are ether ebay or a cargo breakers but all main parts eg brakes alternators radiators clutches are available.

Naomi keep enjoying your truck keep it serviced give under the cab a coat of underseal and it will last you many years, and with the old cargos there is less to go wrong with them compared to more moden trucks.

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

Getting parts for Cargo trucks is getting harder. Ford dealers don't support them anymore. While you will see a lot of Ford Cargo parts on ebay, you probably won't see the one you want when you need it! The other problem is that, in the past, when parts were readily available through Ford, you could just go to the parts department and tell them what item you needed. They would ask you for a chassis number and they could look it up on the parts microfiche and get the correct part number for the model you have. Many of the people selling parts on ebay are not in the motor trade and while they might have the Ford part number (FINIS number) on the packaging (assuming its the original and correct box!) they often can't tell you what model it's actually for (and sometimes are only guessing that it's for a Cargo). Therefore you are often taking a risk when buying on ebay - unless you have access to a Ford Cargo microfiche and can check the part numbers yourself.
Obviously some parts are not that critical but brake system components are and for example new brake master cylinders are difficult to obtain - the only source now is refurbished units - which are part exchange for your old one. Replacement sheet metal pressings for the cab etc are also hard to obtain new. Scrap yards are OK for certain non critical , non wear items - eg cab trim, mirror arms etc.
Horseboxes are generally very lightly loaded compared to trucks used by hauliers, utility companies, contractors etc. So they are less likely to need new springs etc. The biggest problem is likely to be lack of use. If the truck is left idle over the winter months there will be problems with batteries and things like oil seals. The lorry needs to be given a run once a week if possible - just to coat all rotating components with oil (stop seals drying out or becoming distorted) and to burn off any condensation in the engine cylinders.

Hi, parts are still being made for the older cargos and you can get from truck factors or ebay, some of the brake parts are the same as the newer iveco cargo.

The only parts that are hard to get are the switches in the cab, dont phone your local iveco dealers as they have no intrested in helping with the old ford cargo.

I have found new parts are not that expensive its always worth a ring round to get the best price.
