Fuel Ratio Spear and Jackson SPJHT26?

I have an SPJHT26 hedge trimmer that does not keep running, I believe this may be something to do with the fuel ratio. I am currently using 40:1 which is what the manual says. However it smokes terribly and then cuts out after a little while (10 mins) and then it will not start again. Anyone have any ideas???
