how can I fix my electrolux caravan fridge RM 4270?

The fridge works ok on gas but when I try to switch to mains or 12v nothing happens, the green light comes on with mains but no action and when on 12v, the red light doesn`t light or the fridge work

Hi Geoff,
not sure if this will help, but mine did the same !
and the reply i got, from another forum was,

The green light is on all the time power is applied via the mains control switch. I would think it is far more likely that the 230/40 heating element has burnt out.

Thermostats are more reliable than the heating elements. You didn't mention about 12 v operation - does it work?

For a competent DIY caravanner it is a tedious but straight forward job to replace. You need access to the fridge handbook but the principle is the same for all (almost all as there are some new types now on the market) three way operation fridges.

You should have two access/ventilation grills on the side of your van. These are removable and you can gain access to the gas and electrical connections.

FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY make sure both mains and 12 volt supplies are disconnected - fuses removed. Make sure your LPG is turned off.

Disconnect the gas connection near top of fridge at back. Likewise for the 12 v and mains input.

Remove the fixing screws that hold the fridge in place - they are usually just inside the fridge, 2 on each side and hidden by plastic caps.

It is then possible to pull the fridge out, slowly, checking how the cables over the top of the fridge is placed. If your fridge is stepped, above the van floor, you may need some blocks of wood to hold the fridge level as you pull it out.

You will see the electrical connections on the top. NOTE very carefully the connecting points for the mains heater. Disconnent and then use a meter to check continuity of the heater. They often go open circuit.

If it has to be replaced it is necessary to carefully remove part of the chimney insulation and cable clips. You will probably find it attached sideways on to the 12 volt heater. Remove completely and the fit a new unit in reverse.

The heater unit costs about £30 and to do the whole job takes a couple of hours. Caravan workshops will do the job for you for about £130 - 150 but please check!

Some Electrolux dealers will also do this work at your house/caravan location. I have found their charges to be similar.

Do take care to use the correct sealant when re-connecting the gas supply. Do take great care in making sure everything fits back together without any struggle.
