What is that noise?

Folks. i've just bought an 05 1.8 petrol focus. I heard a whining noise coming from a the nearside front. Sounded just like the bearing that went on my old 440.
My mate assures me at 17k this is very unlikely. I'm not so sure and when i break there is an unmistakeable graunching, grinding-not a smooth quiet deceleration that I'm used to-also from the near front. Any takers?

With the state of our roads, bearings and suspension parts take an awful battering, specially on the nearside where it hits all the incompetently fitted drains.

You are probably right about a bearing, forget about mileage, my bearing went after 10,000.
